The table below reflects results through the most recently completed week — regular-season ties count as half a win and half a loss once they occur, though none have yet this season.

How the Standings Work
Teams are ranked first by division record, then by conference tiebreakers if needed — head-to-head result, division record, and common-games record, in that order, before moving to strength of schedule. Division winners host at least one playoff game; the two best non-division-winners in each conference get wild-card spots.
How Many Teams Make the Playoffs
Seven teams from each conference qualify for the postseason — the four division winners (AFC East, North, South, West and their NFC equivalents) plus the three next-best records in the conference as wild cards.
The top division winner in each conference gets a bye through the first playoff weekend; everyone else has to win on the road or host a wild-card game to advance.
That's 14 of the league's 32 teams reaching the postseason, which means more than half the league is chasing one of those spots every year — and why a single September loss can matter more than it looks like at the time, since tiebreakers often come down to division and conference record rather than overall wins.
Why Standings Move Fast This Early in the Season
A one-loss team and an undefeated team are separated by a single game in September, and that gap can flip in either direction the very next week. With only one or two games played, win percentage swings hard on every result — a team that looks like a division favorite in Week 1 can be tied for last by Week 3.
The standings settle into a more reliable shape by Week 6 or 7, once every team has played a mix of home, road, division, and conference opponents. Until then, treat early-season rank as a snapshot, not a forecast.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often are the standings updated? Right after every game finishes — Thursday, Sunday, and Monday night results all factor in before the next week's slate.
What breaks a tie between two teams with the same record? Head-to-head result first, then division record (if applicable), then common-games record, before moving to conference and strength-of-schedule tiebreakers.
Does a tie count as half a win? Yes — an NFL tie counts as half a win and half a loss for both teams in the standings.
How many games are in a regular season? Each team plays 17 regular-season games over an 18-week schedule, with one bye week built in somewhere between Week 4 and Week 14.
Does the team with the best overall record always get the top playoff seed? Not necessarily — the top seed in each conference goes to the division winner with the best record, and division winners are always seeded above wild-card teams regardless of overall record.
Check back after this Sunday's games to see how the standings move or head to the schedule to see exactly when and where to watch your team play.
Do preseason games count toward the standings? No — preseason games have no bearing on the standings. Only regular-season results, starting Week 1, count toward a team's record and playoff positioning.
